Tarragona (45 minutes drive from the holiday villa -Villa WAK) The ancient Roman port city of Tarragona, on a rocky bluff above the Mediterranean, is one of the grandest but most neglected sightseeing centers in Spain. Despite its Roman and medieval remains, it's merely the second oldest city of Catalonia. The Romans captured Tarragona in 218 B.C., and during their rule the city sheltered one million people behind 64km-long (40-mile) city walls. One of the four capitals of Catalonia when it was an ancient principality and once the home of Julius Caesar, Tarragona today consists of an old quarter filled with interesting buildings, particularly the houses with connecting balconies. The upper walled town is mainly medieval, the town below newer. In the new town, walk along the Ramble Nova, a fashionable wide boulevard that's the main artery of life. Running parallel with Ramble Nova to the east is the Ramble Vella, which marks the beginning of the old town. The city has a bullring, good hotels, and even beaches. The Romans were the first to designate Tarragona a resort town. After seeing the attractions listed below, cap off your day with a stroll along the Balcó del Mediterráni (Balcony of the Mediterranean), where the vistas are especially beautiful at sunset.

Amposta (45 minutes drive from the holiday villa -Villa WAK) The hanging bridge of Amposta is the entrnace to the city, which has now become another important symbol of the city, began to be built in 1915. Work was directed by the author of the project, the engineer J. Eugenio Ribera, and the bridge was officially opened in 1921. The principal elements in the hanging bridge are the two stone pillars forming a triumphal arch on either side of the river, and its metal structure, supported by cables. As the first permanent way of crossing the lower stretches of the Ebro, the bridge greatly improved communications in the area and was for many years the one with the greatest span in Spain. River Ebre/Ebro (45 minutes drive from the holiday villa -Villa WAK) The Ebro is the river that gives the Iberian Peninsula its name. The silt carried down by the Ebro and its many tributaries gradually formed the Ebro Delta over thousands of years. The lower reaches of this river witnessed the coming and going of civilisations from Iberian and Roman times right up to the Middle Ages, providing an important means of communication and transport up to the mid-19th century. Passing through Amposta, the Ebro offers the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities. Boat trips and water sports are offered from the river port in the city down to the river mouth and from Amposta to Tortosa and Miravet. Near the quay are Amposta Tourist Information Office and a service area (toilets and showers).
