Barcelona
is said to be Spain's most cosmopolitan, forward-looking and stylish
city. It is certainly one of it's richest, not only economically, but
also in it's history and architecture. Barcelona is buzzing, chic, cool,
glittering and at times spectacular - a city that cannot be ignored
and should be visited!
Once in Barcelona it is difficult to know where to start as there is
just so much to see and do.
You could start off at the Placa de Catalunya (akin to London's Trafalgar
Square) and catch the 'topless' double-decker tourist bus which visits
all the main attractions and from which you can hop on and off as you
please. This is a great way to get an over-view of the city.
From Placa de Catalunya you could then take a stroll down Spain's most
famous street -Las Ramblas , which is a broad, tree lined pedestrian
boulevard, home to buskers, pavement artists, mimes and living statues.
At the end of Las Ramblas is the 60m (200ft) column from where Christopher
Columbus surveys the waterfront. From the top of this column you can
look out over the fabulous new promenades, yacht marinas and quays that
make up the Port Vell waterfront area.
From here you can take the cable car to the top of Montjuic where the
castle will give you a panoramic view of the port and city below. Montjuic
is home to some of Barcelona's best museums and leisure attractions,
beautiful parks and the main group of the 1992 Olympic sites. This area
alone could well take up a day or two of your time.
No visit to Barcelona should be without a stroll around the Barri Gotic
(Gothic quarter). Here you will find a medieval warren of narrow streets,
quaint little plazas and wonderful structures from the city's golden
age, which includes Barcelona's magnificent Cathedral.
