Reus
The
universally-known architect Antoni Gaudí was born in Reus in
1852 and it was here that he spent his childhood and adolescence, made
friends and began his studies before leaving for Barcelona. It is certain
that this period influenced The
arrival of Domènech i Montaner marked the beginning of Reus'
brilliant Modernist period, when he was commissioned to design the ensemble
of the Pere Mata psychiatric institute. This was begun in 1898 and was
a precursor of the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. It
was followed by other commissions in the town, like the Casa Rull, the
Casa Navàs and the Casa Gasull. Mention should also be made of
his other lesser-known works, including the Margenat family mausoleum,
the Font de Rubinat family library and the store of the Casa Llopis.Unfortunately,
some of his projects in the town never came about, such as the Teatre
Circ and the stairway of the Círcol club. Nowadays, Reus still
